OVERVIEW

Rebuilding a Real-Time Trading Platform from Scratch

Overview

Football Index was a high-traffic, real-time football trading platform serving thousands of daily users. 4-year lead engagement on the frontend.

Rebuilt the platform from scratch in 6 months, replacing a failing legacy system, then maintained and scaled it through 4 years of high-traffic peaks.

Building the Team

Grew the frontend team from 0 to 10 engineers. Set hiring standards, agile workflows, and architectural conventions. Wrote the technical interview process the team used for years afterwards.

Testing & Reliability

Architected a 3,000+ test suite reaching ~60% coverage across the codebase — a deliberate investment that paid back during rapid scaling and the platform's high-volatility trading windows.

Real-Time Data Visualisation

Built real-time data visualisations using D3.js for trading flows and time-series analysis. The visualisations were core to the user trading experience — showing price movements, market depth, and historical performance.

Mobile MVPs

Shipped two mobile MVPs to validate the mobile product thesis — one in React Native, one in Kotlin Multiplatform.

Closure

Continued through the platform's UKGC suspension and wind-down period to support customer communications and technical handover. Clean end to a 4-year engagement.
